Nocturne No. 1
Media: Black vinyl, darkened room, ambient artificial light

In this condition-specific work meant to be viewed exclusively at night, I deconstructed the basic optical system of a camera obscura in order to excavate existing light phenomena. This installation required the body’s immersion in immense darkness; a vital condition for making visible the environment’s exterior urban projections. Instead of using a traditional lens, which focuses light and clearly, optically images what is beyond the camera obscura’s aperture, I affixed a thin rectangular outline to the window. This rectangular aperture not only abstracted the view of the camera obscura, breaking with its traditional realism, but also transformed the action of light. Thin lines of light emerged out of the darkness, outlining the small rectangular room and echoing the architecture of the space itself.
